STOP PRESS: Home Education Guidance Consultation

Schoolhouse has been advised by the Scottish Executive that they will shortly be launching a consultation on the home education guidance: “As you will be aware, the document Guidance on the Circumstances in which parents may Choose to Educate their Children at Home http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2004/03/19061/34285 was published in 2004, with a commitment to review in 2 years. New Scottish Consumer Council / Schoolhouse research project gets underway

Schoolhouse has once again joined forces with the Scottish Consumer Council (SCC) to undertake research into how the Scottish Executive guidance on home education is being implemented by councils. A survey of councils by Schoolhouse last year pointed to a failure on the part of many local authorities to update their home education policies and procedures following publication of the guidance in March 2004. Schoolhouse therefore welcomed the SCC’s approach to participate in a joint research project as a follow-up to its 2000 report ‘Homeworks’, which highlighted the inconsistent treatment of home educating families by local authorities in Scotland. Schoolhouse celebrates 10 years of supporting home education in Scotland

Home educating families from across Scotland gathered in Dundee on Saturday 13 May to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the national charity Schoolhouse Home Education Association. Founded in the city in 1996 by a group of parents from the Tayside area who were concerned at the lack of dedicated information and support available to home educators in Scotland, the organisation has grown into a highly respected national body whose volunteers handle more than 1000 enquiries every year.
