Scots charity enquiries “skyrocket” as English home educators head for the Highlands – England’s loss will be Scotland’s gain, says Schoolhouse Scotland’s national home education support organisation Schoolhouse has reported  a dramatic increase in enquiries from English home educating families who are preparing to move north of the border following publication of a DCSF-commissioned report on elective home education by Graham Badman. A Schoolhouse member has received, via his MP, the following response from Keith Brown MSP, Minister for Schools and Skills, to his query about the Scottish Government’s plans (or otherwise) for a ‘review’ of elective home education. Thank you for your letter dated 20 February to Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, on behalf of your constituent, Mr S, regarding home education. Question time for schoolhouse at family festival

A Schoolhouse representative took part today (15 May) as a panel member in a question and answer session on ‘your child’s education’ at a family festival organised by the charity Parents Like Us. Also on the panel at the Edinburgh event were the head teachers of Leith Primary School, Loretto’s Independent School in Musselburgh and the Edinburgh Rudolf Steiner School. The small but interested audience in the ‘Talk Tent’ asked questions of panel members covering issues such as the optimum age to begin formal education, class sizes, state funding and resources for home educators, the merits and demerits of composite school…
