Virtual assistance for Schoolhouse

Wednesday, 9th December 2009 | Home Ed in the News | Schoolhouse

Schoolhouse is delighted to welcome Theresia Piggott from Angus Business Support as its new ‘virtual’ administration assistant. As part of the reorganisation we have recently been undertaking in order to streamline our services, Theresia will be assuming responsibility for Schoolhouse memberships and other administrative tasks in the new year. This will take some of the strain from our hard pressed volunteers who will be continuing to deal directly with all the home education and media enquiries. Visitors to the Schoolhouse website may have noticed some changes afoot, but the site  is still a work in progress and will be relaunching early in 2010 with a design makeover and a host of…

Schoolhouse welcomes Mike Russell appointment

Tuesday, 1st December 2009 | Home Ed in the News | Media | Schoolhouse

Michael Russell has today been announced as Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning in the Scottish Government. Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, said: “It is appropriate that a fresh look is taken … to break the impasse for the benefit of parents, teachers and children. I believe that Michael Russell can bring new thinking to this tough task.” Commenting on the appointment, Schoolhouse Convener Sheila Struthers said: “In his capacity as Shadow Education Minister in the first Scottish Parliament from 1999 to 2003, Michael Russell demonstrated a willingness to listen to those involved in education, both inside and outside…

Volunteers wanted!

Monday, 23rd November 2009 | Home Ed in the News | Law & Policy | Research | Schoolhouse

Is your Local Authority providing accurate information about elective home education? Schoolhouse is working on its Local Authority contacts list in which it aims to include pages with links to each of the 32 authority websites, their information for parents on home education and their named contacts as required by the Scottish Government guidance. Some authorities rightly point parents to the statutory guidance and their local policies and procedures are in accordance with it. In some cases, there is little or no information about home education on the council’s website, and in others, there is worryingly inaccurate and misleading information. Astonishingly, a few councils appear still to be using proformas developed by Strathclyde Regional Council which ceased…

GIRFEC – a threat to every family

Wednesday, 18th November 2009 | Home Ed in the News | Law & Policy | Schoolhouse

Schoolhouse enquiries are showing a worrying trend which suggests that ‘services’ are now actively seeking out home educated children and requesting health and other information. We hope to take advice on the legality of such requests soon. In the meantime we are suggesting that any parent who is in receipt of such a request should write back asking why this information is  required and for what purpose, whether or not they are obliged to provide it and, if so, on what legal basis? Unfortunately, we expect the numbers will continue to rise as the publication of the Getting Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) pathfinder…

The Badman effect on Scotland: a résumé

Friday, 6th November 2009 | Home Ed in the News | Law & Policy | Schoolhouse

Schoolhouse continues to be deluged with enquiries from home educators throughout the UK who are concerned about the implications of the Badman review for home educators in Scotland. Some are thinking of relocating to escape the draconian measures proposed by the DSCF, while others are concerned that the Scottish Government may have similar plans to regulate the practice of elective home education, most especially autonomous home education, out of existence. The Badman review is not directly relevant to Scotland as education is a devolved matter, although Scottish MPs are entitled to vote on English education issues. Those who are concerned…

Care Commission confirms childcare rules

Thursday, 5th November 2009 | Home Ed in the News | Law & Policy | Schoolhouse

Following the high profile case of two policewomen in England who were said by Ofsted to be acting outwith the law by entering into a reciprocal childcare arrangement, Schoolhouse contacted the  Care Commission to request clarification of the relevant regulations  in Scotland.

They have now responded to our query as  follows:

“The Care Commission takes the view that it would only be in circumstances where a person was being paid for looking after a child that we would require them to register as a childminder.”

Select Committee memoranda published

Wednesday, 4th November 2009 | Home Ed in the News | Law & Policy | Schoolhouse

The Children, Schools and Families Select Committee of the UK Parliament has now published the memoranda submitted for consideration in its recent inquiry into the Badman review of elective home education in England. Although Scotland is not affected by the Badman proposals as education is a devolved issue,  Schoolhouse has been inundated with enquiries from English home educators planning to relocate north of the border.  Since Graham Badman failed  to take the  Scottish statutory guidance into consideration when reviewing the framework  in England,  Schoolhouse  submitted a memorandum to the Select Committe in which it drew attention to this omission and objected…

Schoolhouse enquiries “skyrocket”

Sunday, 2nd August 2009 | Home Ed in the News | Media | Schoolhouse

Scots charity enquiries “skyrocket” as English home educators head for the Highlands – England’s loss will be Scotland’s gain, says Schoolhouse Scotland’s national home education support organisation Schoolhouse has reported  a dramatic increase in enquiries from English home educating families who are preparing to move north of the border following publication of a DCSF-commissioned report on elective home education by Graham Badman. While the summer holiday period is usually less busy for the charity, enquiries from England are said to have “skyrocketed” since the report was published in June and its controversial proposals were accepted in…
